Short answer: As of July 2026, Panera Bread has no stores, offices, sourcing disclosures, or business ties in Israel, and it has never issued a corporate statement on Israel or the Israel-Hamas war. What the record actually shows
Panera's forerunner was founded in Missouri in 1987 as the Saint Louis Bread Company and later renamed Panera Bread. From the start it was a North American bakery-cafe concept, and today its roughly 2,100 locations sit entirely in the United States (48 states) and Ontario, Canada. Searches of company filings, franchise disclosure documents, and news coverage turn up no Israeli stores, offices, research operations, acquisitions, or named suppliers. (One recurring point of confusion is the Panera inside Boston's Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, which is named for a US hospital, not the country.) The ownership story is where things get more interesting. On April 5, 2017, JAB Holding Company, the Luxembourg-based investment vehicle of Germany's billionaire Reimann family, agreed to buy Panera for about $7.5 billion and take it private. Founder Ron Shaich, who was raised in a Jewish family in Newark, New Jersey, exited and no longer owns any part of the company (Forbes).
On March 25, 2019, the Reimann family publicly admitted that its patriarchs, Albert Reimann Sr. and Jr., were committed Nazis who used forced and slave labor, and pledged about 10 million euros in amends after commissioning a historian's investigation (The Washington Post, BBC). Later that year, on December 11, 2019, the Reimann-linked Alfred Landecker Foundation pledged 5 million euros to the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany (the Claims Conference) to support aging Holocaust survivors (The Times of Israel, Claims Conference).
In 2020, the family formalized a long-term commitment through the same foundation: roughly 25 million euros a year, about 250 million euros over a decade, for Holocaust remembrance and education, combating antisemitism, and protecting minorities and democracy (Alfred Landecker Foundation). That giving supports Jewish and Holocaust-related causes broadly. From what can be verified, it is not directed to the State of Israel or Israeli institutions specifically.
Ownership has not changed since. In November 2023, Panera Brands filed confidentially for a US IPO, but no shares were sold and the company remains privately held by JAB (CNBC).
Where the boycott talk comes from
Because there is no documented commercial link to Israel, BDS and "which brands to boycott" lists generally file Panera under boycott-safe. It is worth being precise about what that label means: it certifies the absence of verified ties, nothing more. It is not evidence that Panera supports Israel, and it is not evidence that it opposes Israel either.
Viral social-media posts and "brands that support Israel" lists sometimes drop Panera into a pro-Israel bucket. We could find no corporate action to back that up. Panera does not campaign publicly on the conflict in either direction, and it has issued no statement on Israel or the war. Anyone repeating the claim that Panera "supports Israel" (or the opposite) is working from something other than the company's own record.
