Short answer: No. Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google and Alphabet, was born on June 10, 1972 in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India, to what Wikipedia's biography describes as a Tamil Hindu family, and he still publicly celebrates Diwali as a practice in his own home. No reputable source documents Jewish parentage, ancestry, conversion, or self-identification. He has, however, spoken forcefully against antisemitism.
What the record actually shows
- Born June 10, 1972 in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India. His birth name was Pichai Sundararajan. His father, Regunatha Pichai, was an electrical engineer at the British conglomerate GEC, and his mother, Lakshmi, worked as a stenographer. He has a younger brother. His Wikipedia biography is the source that describes the household as a Tamil Hindu family.
- Childhood in Chennai, 1970s and 1980s. Forbes reported in its 2015 profile that the family lived in a two-room apartment where "Sundar and his younger brother slept in the living room," that "The Pichais didn't own a car" and that "they got their first telephone when Sundar was 12 years old." The Forbes profile makes no mention of religion at all.
- Diwali, October 20, 2025. Pichai posted a photo of barfi arranged in Google's colors alongside ladoos, marigolds and rangoli, writing: "Obviously this is the only way we serve the barfi in my house. Wishing everyone a Happy Diwali filled with light, joy, and your favorite festive treats (Google themed or otherwise!)." He had marked the holiday publicly the previous year as well, with a Google-designed diya, as India TV reported. This is the clearest first-person evidence of his own household practice.
- Marriage and family. He is married to Anjali Pichai (née Haryani), whom he met while studying chemical engineering at IIT Kharagpur, and they have two children. Her father, Olaram Haryani, is a retired employee of a Government Polytechnic College in Kota, Rajasthan, per the South China Morning Post, which makes no religion claim either.
- December 11, 2015: an open letter on religious intolerance. Pichai published "Let's not let fear defeat our values" on Medium, defending Muslim and minority communities during US campaign rhetoric about barring Muslims. He wrote, "I feel we must speak out," adding that this applied particularly to those not under attack, and called "The open-mindedness, tolerance, and acceptance of new Americans" one of the country's greatest strengths. As TechCrunch reported, he framed it through his own immigrant experience rather than his own religion.
- Still leading Google in 2026. He authored Alphabet's Q2 2026 earnings message on July 22, 2026, bylined "CEO of Google and Alphabet." He also appears on the 2026 TIME100 list, in a tribute written by Andrew Ng, and Stanford has named him its 2026 commencement speaker.
Why people ask
The likeliest reason is Google itself. The company was co-founded by Sergey Brin and Larry Page, both of whom the Times of Israel counted among the Jews in the Forbes top 50 billionaires in its March 2015 list. Brin was born in Moscow to a Jewish family and came to the United States at age six, his family aided by HIAS as they fled Soviet antisemitism, and he gave the agency $1 million in October 2009. Pichai joined Google in 2004 and became CEO in 2015. He is a hired executive, not a founder, so a reader searching "Google CEO Jewish" is often carrying an association that belongs to the founders.
The second driver is the name, and it does not survive a look. "Pichai" is not a surname in the Western sense. Under Tamil naming convention he was born Pichai Sundararajan, carrying his father's name. There is nothing Jewish about it, and in any case a name never establishes anyone's Jewishness. The line circulating online in which Pichai supposedly says the Hindu faith he was raised in emphasizes respect for others appears only on AI content farms, with no interview, transcript, or reputable outlet behind it. The same goes for the caste descriptor often attached to him. Neither belongs in a serious biography.
Sundar Pichai and Israel
After the October 7, 2023 attacks, Pichai posted publicly: "Important to call out and stand against antisemitism at this terrible moment. It's never acceptable. Proud to sign this commitment to raise awareness and condemn this historic evil," as Business Today reported on October 12, 2023, identifying the pledge as the ADL's. Google appears among the new signatories in the ADL's October 26, 2023 release on its Workplace Pledge to Fight Antisemitism. On October 17, 2023, in a post he authored, Google committed $8 million in grants for civilian relief, including $3 million to the Israeli trauma organization NATAL and $3 million through Save the Children for Gaza, and he wrote that "Our Jewish Googlers around the world are reeling from these attacks."
