- Her father was born in New York to Lebanese parents, Alberto Mebarak Spath and Isabel Chadid Baizer, and moved to Colombia at age five. That Lebanese line shaped the Arabic verse in her 1998 song "Ojos Así" (The National). - She was raised Catholic. CBS News reported that her father "scraped together the money to keep his bookish daughter in Catholic school," and described Barranquilla as "a melting pot of cultures: indigenous, European, African, Middle Eastern" (60 Minutes). At that Catholic school her dancing was encouraged, though she was rejected from the school choir because the music teacher thought her voice was too strong (Biography).

The second driver is a hoax. For years a chain story claimed she refused to speak to an Israeli caller on MTV and said she would rather have pigs listen to her music than Israelis.
