Four things keep the question alive, and none of them touch his ancestry. The biggest is The Red Sea Diving Resort, the Netflix film written and directed by Gideon Raff in which Evans plays Ari Levinson, the Mossad operative leading the unit. It dramatizes the real operation that used a Sudanese diving resort as cover to extract Ethiopian Jews to Israel in the early 1980s. Casting was announced in March 2017 and the film streamed worldwide on July 31, 2019. The Jewish Chronicle covered it as a modern-day exodus story, and Raff told the Times of Israel that Evans "was very passionate about doing this movie. He read the script and sought me out," calling him "the least spoiled actor I've ever worked with" who "understood that this is a story about humanity, about people coming together, about a family reunited." The film also drew "white savior" criticism from Jewish and general outlets, including a Jewish Currents piece titled "Savior Story."
The other three are the role, the feud and the relationship. Captain America himself was created by two sons of Jewish immigrants, writer Joe Simon (born Hymie Simon) and artist Jack Kirby (born Jacob Kurtzberg), who debuted the hero punching Hitler on the cover of Captain America Comics #1, cover-dated March 1941, which is a well-documented reason the character, and by extension the actor playing him, gets read as Jewish. Then in early February 2017, David Duke publicly framed Evans as a servant of Jewish interests, which put the word "Zionist" next to his name in a lot of headlines.
