The family moved to Cleveland, Ohio when he was one, then to South Africa and Namibia from 1971 to 1977, before settling in Foster City, California. He changed elementary schools seven times. - Raised Lutheran and evangelical. Fortune reports that Thiel "grew up Lutheran but describes himself as having complicated religious views" (Fortune). UnHerd reports he "was raised Evangelical" and calls his own views "somewhat heterodox," a self-description that traces back to George Packer's 2011 New Yorker profile (UnHerd). The two labels coexist in the record: a German Lutheran family and American evangelical church life.

Why people ask
Three things keep the question alive, and none of them is evidence. The first is his circle. Thiel co-founded PayPal in 1998 with Max Levchin, who was born to a Jewish family in Kyiv, and he co-founded Palantir with Alex Karp, whom he met at Stanford Law School. Karp's father was Robert Joseph Karp, a Jewish clinical pediatrician, and Karp described himself as Jewish in a 2024 interview, saying his background informed Palantir having Israel as a client. Being named repeatedly alongside Jewish co-founders is an association, not an ancestry.
The second is the name and the birthplace. A German surname and a Frankfurt birth get read as a Jewish marker, and that inference is simply wrong: Thiel Sr. was a German engineer whose work moved the family across three continents, and nothing in the family record is Jewish. The third is the Antichrist lecture series, which pushed apocalyptic theology into mainstream news in 2025 and 2026 and put his name next to the word "Jewish" in commentary and search results. That adjacency is about coverage, not about Thiel's background. On the actual question, the record is unambiguous and Christian.
Peter Thiel and Israel
Thiel has a real Israel record, though it is more commercial than ideological. He spoke in Tel Aviv-Jaffa at the Peres Center for Peace and Innovation in June 2017, telling Israeli entrepreneurs the local ecosystem copies more than it invents (Haaretz).
