His father, Samuel Nowlin Reeves Jr., is from Hawaii and is of Native Hawaiian, Chinese, English and Portuguese ancestry. Reeves holds Canadian citizenship and was raised largely in Toronto (biographical record). NBC News has separately described his father as Chinese Hawaiian.
- Neither parent, and no grandparent, is described as Jewish in any acceptable source. The line about "Jewish heritage" among his mother's ancestors originates on content farms and ethnicity wikis. It has no reputable support.
- December 2021: in an interview NBC Asian America published December 17, 2021, around The Matrix Resurrections, Reeves described his heritage in Asian and Hawaiian terms. "My relationship to my Asian identity, it's always been good and healthy. And I love it," he said, adding, "We've been growing up together." Asked about being called a person of color, he said, "I don't know if I agree with that statement. But I don't not agree" (NBC News).
- September 2013: in an interview The Daily Beast published September 13, 2013, asked whether he is Buddhist, Reeves said, "No, no. I had a little bit of experience with it when I was working on Little Buddha, but I haven't taken refuge in the dharma." On belief generally he said, "Do I believe in God, faith, inner faith, the self, passion, and things? Yes, of course! I'm very spiritual" (The Daily Beast).
- February 2005: during press for Constantine, in which he plays an exorcist drawn from Catholic mythology, Reeves declined to discuss any specific denominational question, saying, "It's something I think is very personal, and it's something that is private" (interview transcript). So, that's like, a welcome to Hollywood [moment]." He was briefly credited as K.C. Reeves. The Hollywood Reporter notes he did not explain his then-manager's reasoning.
The second driver is a scattering of Jewish-adjacent associations online, none of which say anything about his own background. He appeared in photos from a private party for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in early March 2014, one guest among dozens. He trained for John Wick: Chapter 2 with Aaron Cohen, a former member of an Israeli special operations unit, per a 2016 firearms trade blog. A 2019 post by Congregation Adath Israel in San Francisco compared his well-known habit of not touching women in photographs to shomer negiah, while explicitly not claiming he is Jewish. And The Matrix attracts "secret Jewish history" framing, which on August 19, 2024 curdled into a false claim by Likud MK Galit Distel Atbaryan on a Channel 14 panel that the film "was written by two yeshiva students" (The Jerusalem Post). It was written and directed by Lana and Lilly Wachowski, and the claim has nothing to do with Reeves. One more correction worth making: his mother's brief 1970 marriage to director Paul Aaron is often cited as a Jewish connection.
