Clooney's first marriage, to actress Talia Balsam in Las Vegas in 1989 (they divorced in 1993), placed him briefly inside a Jewish showbiz family. Talia Balsam is the daughter of actor Martin Balsam, who was born November 4, 1919, in the Bronx to Russian Jewish parents, Lillian (née Weinstein) and Alberto Balsam, a shampoo manufacturer, according to Wikipedia. That is a former father-in-law, and it says nothing about Clooney's own background.
His filmography adds to the impression. In February 2012, JTA reported that Clooney had optioned The Monuments Men and would likely star in the film, about Allied art experts who tracked down Nazi-looted artworks, most of them stolen from Jewish owners. Covering the 2014 film, the Jewish Journal quoted Clooney describing a set built from a real photograph: "in Paris they collected all of the belongings of Jewish families and in fact set up rooms that looked like showrooms for blocks and blocks." His producing partner and co-writer on the film, Grant Heslov, grew up attending Temple Ner Tamid in Palos Verdes, where his father was a founding member.
Then there is the photo. On October 3, 2013, Steven Spielberg's USC Shoah Foundation gave Clooney its Ambassador for Humanity Award at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, before roughly 800 guests, citing his work on Darfur and his co-founding of Not On Our Watch. "It's really hard for bad things to happen in bright light," Clooney said, per the foundation's account, and added that it would be nice to make the work obsolete. Spielberg called him "the best kind of humanitarian." The same night, Clooney photobombed a picture of Spielberg with Jerry and Jessica Seinfeld, which JTA wrote up as "George Clooney's Jewish photobomb." The joke, in the winning entry of a Deadline caption contest, was that he was the ham lurking behind everyone. He was the one non-Jewish face in the frame, which is the whole point of the gag and probably a fair share of the search traffic.
George Clooney and Israel
Clooney's Israel-adjacent record is humanitarian and marital rather than political. He narrated Never Stop Dreaming: The Life and Legacy of Shimon Peres, a documentary about the Israeli president and prime minister, written and directed by Richard Trank and produced by Moriah Films, the film division of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, with filming beginning in early 2016 with Peres's cooperation. On October 28, 2020, George and Amal Clooney received the Simon Wiesenthal Center and Museum of Tolerance's Humanitarian Award at a virtual dinner, where he said, "We've said time and time again 'Never again,' and we mean it. But the truth is we're not very good at it," and, "Tolerance for all races. Tolerance for all religions. That's what matters" (Jewish Journal, Algemeiner). The closest he has come to the subject directly involves his wife's legal work, including her role on the ICC prosecutor's expert panel in May 2024, and a private call to a senior Biden adviser in May 2024, reported by The Washington Post that June.
