Short answer: No. Tom Cruise is not Jewish, and no reputable source documents Jewish parentage or ancestry on either side of his family. He was born to Catholic parents in Syracuse, New York, spent a year training for the Catholic priesthood at a Franciscan seminary as a teenager, and has been a Scientologist since 1986. His documented ancestry is English, German and Irish.
What the record actually shows
- Born July 3, 1962, in Syracuse, New York, to Mary Lee Pfeiffer, a special-education teacher, and Thomas Cruise Mapother III, an electrical engineer, both from Louisville, Kentucky. The Jewish magazine Moment ran its own "Jewish or Not" verdict on him and found he is not Jewish, stating that "Cruise is of English, German and Irish descent".
- 1975: his parents divorced shortly after his 13th birthday, and his mother moved to Louisville with her four children, as reported by the Irish Examiner.
- Raised Catholic. Biography.com puts it directly: "Cruise, who grew up Catholic, made a surprising pivot at age 14 when he thought seriously about becoming a priest."
- Fall 1976: at 14, then known by the family name Mapother, he entered St. Francis Seminary in Mt. Healthy, outside Cincinnati, Ohio, after hearing Father Ric Schneider speak at his Louisville school. He stayed one year, then enrolled at St. Xavier High School in Louisville. A seminary classmate, Don Weller, told the Irish Examiner: "He was well-indoctrinated ... For him to totally shut himself off was just amazing."
- 1986 onward: Cruise has been a Scientologist. The Hollywood Reporter and other outlets have reported that his then-girlfriend and later wife Mimi Rogers introduced him to the church that year.
- October 2016: at the London premiere of "Jack Reacher: Never Go Back," asked by ITV about Louis Theroux's documentary on the church, Cruise called Scientology "a beautiful religion", said he had been a Scientologist for over 30 years, and said that without it he would not be where he is.
- April 3, 2013: Cruise was given a Certificate of Irish Heritage at Iveagh House in Dublin by Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore after genealogists traced his Cruise and Mapother lines back to Ireland, including an ancestor, Augustino de Cruce, who witnessed a document for Strongbow in 1176. The Irish Times reported that "Cruise was presented with a Certificate of Irish Heritage this morning at Iveagh House by the Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore." That formal ancestry record contains no Jewish line.

The strongest driver is one performance. In "Tropic Thunder" (2008), Cruise played Les Grossman, a bald, foul-mouthed studio boss written as an implicitly Jewish Hollywood mogul, and the Jewish framing was Cruise's own idea. Director Ben Stiller said on "Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend" that Cruise "wanted to have big, thick forearms that were hairy and he wanted to be Jewish," adding, "I mean it's never really stated, but that's kind of implied." The cameo was widely discussed at the time, including by The Forward, which weighed whether the Jewish-mogul stereotype was something to enjoy or object to.
