- Born October 8, 1970, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His father, Kent Telfer Damon, was a stockbroker of English and Scottish ancestry. His mother, Nancy Carlsson-Paige, is an early childhood education professor at Lesley University of Finnish and Swedish descent, whose family surname had been changed from Pajari to Paige.
- Raised by his mother in Cambridge after his parents divorced when he was two, alongside his older brother Kyle, a sculptor and artist, in a six-family communal house in a progressive-education, activist household, per his biography. No Jewish ancestry appears on either side of that genealogy.
- December 2011: MTV's Josh Horowitz quizzed Damon and Scarlett Johansson on Jewish culture in a Chanukah segment tied to We Bought a Zoo. JTA's write-up put it plainly: "Josh Horowitz asks the stars of 'We Bought A Zoo' a few questions about what it means to be a Jew. (She is, he isn't.)" JTA added that "Matt stunk in a very adorable way" on the trivia.
- December 9, 2005: Damon married Luciana Barroso in a small private civil ceremony in New York City. The CBS News report describes no religious element and names no officiant.

The question traces back almost entirely to one film. School Ties, released in September 1992, was Damon's first major onscreen role. Set in the 1950s, it follows David Greene (Brendan Fraser), a working-class Jewish quarterback from Scranton, Pennsylvania, recruited to an elite New England prep school. JTA's retrospective notes the film's antisemitic slurs "during a shower room brawl (with Damon's villain character Charlie Dillon)," a swastika painted on David's dorm room wall, and a cheating scandal engineered to frame him. It was one of Hollywood's few films about antisemitism at school, directed by Robert Mandel and written by Dick Wolf, with Randall Batinkoff, who JTA notes appears to have been the only Jewish actor in the cast.
Here is the irony. The role that files Damon next to the word "Jewish" in people's memories is the role of the antisemite, not the Jew. Damon played Charlie Dillon, the classmate who turns on David. Fraser, speaking on The Howard Stern Show in an interview reported February 8, 2023, described the confrontation between the two characters this way: "His antisemitism and his prejudice is stripped down naked and it's ugly." Being cast opposite a Jewish protagonist, in a story about anti-Jewish bigotry, is not evidence of Jewish heritage. It is evidence of good casting.
Matt Damon and Israel
There is essentially no record. Around the February 28, 2016 Oscars, Israel's tourism ministry offered all-expenses-paid luxury trips to Oscar nominees through a marketing firm behind exploreisrael.com, and the Times of Israel reported that "A year ago Israel offered Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon and other Hollywood stars all-expenses paid luxury trips." A year later, none of the 26 invited stars had made the trip, and Damon is not recorded as accepting, declining, or commenting. He does not appear among the 470-plus signatories of the Artists4Ceasefire open letter launched October 20, 2023, and no pro-Israel or anti-Israel statement, petition, or donation from him has surfaced through August 2026.
