Is Dakota Johnson Jewish?

Is Dakota Johnson Jewish?

Short answer: No. Dakota Johnson is the daughter of actors Don Johnson and Melanie Griffith, and no Jewish ancestry is documented for her on either side. She has never publicly discussed her own religion, and the question mostly traces back to a 2022 film set on the bar mitzvah circuit.

What the record actually shows

Why people ask

The biggest driver is Cha Cha Real Smooth, which premiered at Sundance in January 2022 and reached Apple TV+ that June. Johnson co-starred as Domino opposite writer-director Cooper Raiff in a film built around the New Jersey bar and bat mitzvah party circuit, complete with candle lightings and the Hamotzi and Kiddush blessings, with part of the score composed by Este Haim of the band Haim. JTA noted that Raiff's bar mitzvah party host is not Jewish, and neither is Raiff himself, and that Johnson's character even says, at one point, that she sometimes envies Judaism. The Forward ran its own critique of how the film handles its Jewish characters, and Hey Alma argued that the movie is about bar mitzvahs but is not a Jewish film, made by a non-Jewish filmmaker with Judaism filtered through an outsider perspective. None of that says anything about Johnson's own background.

The question surged again in March 2026, when Johnson fronted Calvin Klein's Spring 2026 campaign, her first for the brand, shot and directed by Gordon von Steiner. Calvin Klein said the campaign rolled out from March 9 in stores, on calvinklein.com, on social, and in out-of-home placements, and search interest in her background spiked after the ads appeared. A third, weaker thread involves her mother's second husband: Melanie Griffith was married to actor Steven Bauer from 1981 to 1989, and their son Alexander Bauer is Johnson's half-brother. Bauer, born in Havana, does have documented Jewish ancestry through a maternal grandfather who immigrated to Cuba from Germany. Steven Bauer is not related to Johnson by blood, though his son Alexander is her half-brother, and that marriage ended before she was born in October 1989 to Don Johnson, whom Griffith remarried.

Dakota Johnson and Israel

Johnson visited Israel over the weekend of November 18-19, 2017, with her then-boyfriend Chris Martin. The pair were seen in Herzliya, dined with Nick Cave, and attended the Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds concert in Tel Aviv. It was a private trip, not a political one, and beyond it there is no on-record public statement from Johnson about Israel, the war in Gaza, or antisemitism. The bottom line

No reputable source documents Jewish parentage for Dakota Johnson. Both parents and all four grandparents are documented as non-Jewish, with ancestry traced to Sweden, Norway, Germany, England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland. She has never publicly claimed any religion, and the recurring question comes from her film roles and her recent campaign work rather than from anything in her family record.
