The fuller picture
Sheinbaum, an award-winning physicist and former Mexico City mayor, took office in October 2024 as the candidate of the leftist MORENA party. Her maternal grandparents were Jews who emigrated from Bulgaria and her paternal grandparents from Lithuania, making her Mexico's first president of Jewish heritage. She has described herself as not religiously observant, and her public record contains no statements framing her leadership through a religious-Jewish lens.
On Israel and Gaza specifically, her record through August 2026 runs consistently in one direction: critical of the Israeli government's conduct of the war. She has used the word "genocide," called repeatedly for Palestinian statehood, and demanded the release of Mexican Global Sumud Flotilla activists whom Israel detained in October 2025.
